Gothic tale. These elements, including setting, characters, and theme, are in fact, present in the work, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and A Rose for Emily by William
Faulkner. In Charlotte Gilmans story, The Yellow Wallpaper, it is the study of a woman slowly descending into a world of insanity. However, it must be stated that both
Gilmans story and Faulkners story show the oppression of women by the men in their lives. The feminist overtones cannot be ignored as they are so intricately interwoven into the
major theme of both stories. These women become insane because the men in their lives, for one reason or another, held ultimate control over their basic development as human beings.
The gothic elements are necessary in this tale as it aides in the setting of the tone for the wifes downward spiral. In this story, a young mother sinks
into a deep depression after having her child. Lectured by her husband and forced to abandon all other pursuits than that of wife and mother, the intellectual part of her
mind begins to recoil in horror. You see, he does not believe I am sick! And what can one do? If a physician of high standing, and ones own husband,
assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression -- a slight hysterical tendency what is one to do? (Gilman 193).
The gothic elements in this tale are that of the supernatural. She begins to see fantastical faces and images in the pattern in the wallpaper. The stormy moods and
