the dot-coms that actually made it through the dot-com bust of the late 1990s, early 2000s, Google also showed it had some good staying power, unlike some of its competitors. Google has also gotten some good press -- although not quite so much -- on its philosophy of employment. Much of that press has centered on whether Google can keep its "freewheeling employee" philosophy in the face of its IPO, a time during which investors will be demanding results rather than fun. Along these lines, does Google also have any sort of formal diversity program along with its rather loose personnel program? While the literature is a little sketchy on that one particular question, there is some literature about how some of Googles competitors have fared with specific diversity policies. In this paper, well touch on Googles overall employment policy, examine the diversity policy of Silicon Valley companies in general, and from that, extrapolate some assumptions about Googles management of diversity and inclusion. In the companys recent filing for an IPO, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page noted that they didnt necessarily want their "democratic" culture to change, a culture that has, for the most part, encouraged employees to spend 20 percent of their time working on anything they believe would most benefit the company (Hymowitzh, 2004). They basically set their own hours and own tasks as well (Hymowitzh, 2004).
