this does not tend to prove itself in the long run, bringing philosophers of the day to conclude that character is made largely up of a persons ability to reason
and think for himself and therefore choose the best course of action. And so it would follow, then, that if a person had a sound capacity for reasoning, then so,
too, would his/her character be one of good standing. Perhaps one of the oldest slogans is: Knowledge is Power. In many respects this is true, but knowledge in and of
itself does not make for a good person. Some of the most criminally destructive people in modern times have been extremely intelligent persons. Therefore, possessing reason is more than a
matter of brain power. In Aristotles belief, man is inherently born sinful. Because of this sinful nature, he is not perfect, but may gain insight and attain good character
by practicing virtuous acts and abstaining from vices. When one thinks of character, the common varieties of courage, even temper, justice, and honesty top the list. According to Aristotle, then,
characters definition is the state of experiencing human passions and acting at the right time, with reference to the right objects, towards the right people, with the right motive and
in the right way. In order to do this, however, one must be able to determine, using ones reason, what those right ways and right times are.
He states in Book II, "The moral virtues, then, are engendered in us neither by nor contrary to nature; we are constituted by nature to
