manufacturer headquartered in Grand Rapids, MI. Executive Summary Karen Harvey, the head of Golden Harvest, wants to develop a plan and methods
to move the company toward that of corporate social responsibility. The company is a health food manufacturer headquartered in Grand Rapids MI, and it produces and distributes organic and nutritious
food and beverages. Ms. Harveys goal is to develop and implement a corporate social responsibility plan for the company. This ends up being
easier said than done at times, as there really isnt a "single" definition for corporate social responsibility (though not for lack of trying). The literature indicates that CSR is much
more than the occasional bursts of volunteerism and giving money to various causes. Its also more than ethical behavior by businesses, though this is an important aspect.
The main drive behind CSR is that the organization and its executives understand that the organization and society are inter-related, and that decisions made for
the company will invariably impact the other stakeholders, such as employees, customers, suppliers and the community in which the business operates. Though
it might seem as though corporate social responsibility and the bottom line are mutually exclusive, the literature sees this somewhat differently, pointing out that statistically, companies with known reputations for
social responsibility tend to do better in areas such as share price, market capitalization and even revenues. An examination of local research among Golden Harvest employees and customers shows why;
customers are more willing to buy goods from a company that is socially responsible, while employees like coming to work at such a business.
