(Italian Sonnet-form), Hopkins manages to portray his glimpse of the magnitude of the Creator. It is evident that the themes, symbols, use of prosody, all point toward a rekindling of
faith in mankind for their Creator, a hope that would bring mankind back into alignment with the Universe. The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil; It gathers to a greatness, like the
ooze of oil Crushed(Hopkins). These first
lines utilize or bring to mind the spark of the Creation by Biblical accounts. The electric current of God runs through the act of creation. These first lines, then give
the reader a glimpse of who God is. He is the spark of life; he is like a rich oil, he is greatness. These early lines establish, too, the poets
theme of showing examples of Gods presence in the world. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod; And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
