when realizing that there are often a myriad of messages in the context and complexities of one small poem. Thus, it can be said, that words have power and it
can be argued that the power is concentrated to a fine focus in the art of the poem. In Christina Rosettis poem, Goblin Market, there have been by all research
accounts countless interpretations of this poem. As a matter of fact, one could just as well make up a theme and find it hidden somewhere in the text of the
poem. However, for the sake of argument, it has to be said that those who interpret the poem at its surface, such as giving it the theme of good girls
dont talk to strangers or one should resist temptation, are doing this poem a disservice. It is most assuredly NOT a childrens poem. This poem is about many things, but
all of them tying into one main surreal image; that of sisterhood and resisting the urge of society to make women into mere objects and commodities and the frustration of
instinct. The sensual nature of the poem, also, does not make it fit literature for children. Of course, if one reads it like a Dr. Seuss book, then, no doubt,
a child will enjoy it to some extent, but it is safe to say that this poem was not intended for the young, though it may very well have been
intentioned for the innocent. Rosetti is commonly considered to be among the Victorian writers of the day, however, thanks to a sizeable amount of money which she inherited (an
amazing feat in itself, since women of this time were not allowed to control money), she was able to launch a career as a writer. As such, she was free
