Perhaps less emphasis is placed on corporate responsibility, though "corporate social responsibility," or CSR, is becoming a hot topic in the boardrooms and in business literature. Part of this could be that, on the surface, many of the ethical theories of business dont necessarily tie into being a good corporate citizen, either here or abroad. In this paper, well examine Milton Friedmans neo-liberal theory and determine if, indeed, it can support the idea of global corporate responsibility. What, exactly, does Friedman talk about when hes discussing a business social responsibility? In short -- its pretty simple: The social responsibility of a business is to increase its profits. The idea is that if a business sole responsibility is to increase profits, those profits should trickle down to benefit everyone from the employees to the community. But the argument against this is that, in order to meet social responsibility, a corporate executive would need to spend money for a general social interest -- meaning differently than the stockholders would spend it. In other words, the business would no longer be living up to its responsibility, i.e., existing to make profits. But the theory doesnt necessarily jive with the idea, at least on the surface. To the mind of many, there simply is no connection between corporate social responsibility, especially on a global scale, and neo-liberal politics, which focuses on the individual, and cares more about the dollars flowing in rather than the plight of a community that is supporting a particular company or factory. ...
