- the story was romantic and made strong sense; the best way to get rid of dirt and corruption is to wash it clean with water. The story made poetic
sense, and was a good tale with which to entertain children. For centuries, therefore, the stories in the Bible were revered and unquestioned, with the document being taken as truth.
However, Christianity was shaken during the 19th century when an archeologist found part of an ancient scroll which was to be named
the Epic of Gilgamesh. As more research was uncovered, it was found that this epic dated back to ancient Sumerian times. Even more important, many of the accounts recorded in
this Epic were strikingly similar to the Bible; including that of Noah, the ark and the Flood. This paper will attempt to
analyze and compare the two stories and to determine if, indeed, there are similarities, and therefore, conclude that the Biblical account of the Flood could, indeed, be based on the
Epic of Gilgamesh. Who was Gilgamesh? According to Biblical scholars who have researched ancient scrolls, Gilgamesh was a Sumerian hero who was
lord of the Sumerian city of Uruk1. The Epic of Gilgamesh was found and eventually pieced together on 12 cuneiform tablets by Assyrian scholars during the seventh century, then was
