long working hours, stress and burnout may not be as inevitable as most people think, according to academics in the Business Management department at Queen Mary. A much more important factor is the individuals degree of involvement with their job, and the extent to which they find their work enjoyable and congenial. One member of staff distinguished neatly between stress and burnout, saying "I am stressed because I work long hours, but I dont burn out because Im doing something I like." The difference is important - you can work much shorter hours and burn out much more quickly, if you dont enjoy what youre doing. Relating stress levels to the amount of time one spends behind the desk is much too simplistic, and doesnt take into account the number of people whose stated preference is to remain behind the desk as long as possible, because their involvement with their work is so great. However, interviewees were quick to point out that they did not escape pressures of work entirely, especially where assessment was concerned. The Research Assessment Exercise causes problems not only for new members of staff, who may not have any publications under their belt, but also for those who are simply not prolific writers. The pressure of meeting publication deadlines not only adds to general levels of workplace stress, but also leaves academics with a sneaking suspicion that quantity is more important than quality. Its not what you publish, its whether youve had "four in by 2007", as one academic commented.
