(though lately those glass jars have been plastic, for cost and convenience. For generations, Gerbers has been feeding babies food until theyre
better able to manage solid foods. The company makes other products including skincare products, bottles, teethers (pacifiers), accessories for breastfeeding, cups and infant toys (Murray, 2004). Meanwhile, Gerber Life Insurance,
an offshoot of the company, offers whole and term life products for children (Murray 2004). Almost from the beginning, Gerber had the
baby in mind as the customer (not to mention the babys parents, who were looking for more convenient ways to serve wholesome food that was packaged in a sanitary setting).
(Shapiro, 1995). Gerber technically got its start in the late 1920s when one night, Dorothy Gerber and her husband were preparing for
a night out, but she was stuck in the kitchen, straining peas for her infant (Shapiro, 1995). When she asked her husband, Daniel, to take over, the results were
a mess (Shapiro, 1995). When viewing this, Dorothy asked the logical question, namely that Daniel was able to puree tomatoes at his fathers plant (Freemont Canning Company), so why not
peas as well? (Shapiro, 1995). Daniel, liking the idea, encouraged his father to do this, and the idea was born for Freemont Cannings "commercially prepared food for babies" (Shapiro, 1995).
The success of the company was assured, because the U.S. was entering into a time during which nutritional needs of babies were changing (Shapiro, 1995). No longer were babies expected
