despite his religious upbringing, George Bush Jr. during his college years (at Yale and Harvard), was considered a drinker and a partier (Fineman 22). When he married wife Laura in
1977 (and she gave birth later to twin daughters), she became fed up with his drinking (Fineman 22). Thats why, as he approached his 40th birthday, he gave up alcohol
(Fineman 22). Bush also became involved in oil in Midland after college, then in 1987, followed his father to Washington to help
him run his campaign (Fineman 22). He decided, in 1978, to run for Congress, but was beaten out by a native son (Fineman 22).
During the 1990s, Bush entered into many business ventures, including part-ownership of the Texas Rangers baseball team, then a run for the governors mansion in Texas, as he
beat incumbent Anne Richards soundly during the 1996 election. Background of Republican Party Many believe that the party of Abraham Lincoln
(which was considered the brash "newcomer" of the political parties during the mid 19th century), was a party that actually came of age during the middle of the 20th century.
First appearing on the ballot during 1856, the Republican Party was actually the successor to the Whig Party, and was formed to oppose the spread of slavery into the Western
territories (Rae). By 1860, the party had absorbed the Know Nothing Party, with its candidate, Abraham Lincoln, who was elected president (which led to the outbreak of the Civil War)
