the characters look like they would be interesting and entertaining. However, those who are serious students of cinema realize that categorization and the determination of a films relation to its
genre can make or break a films success. During the mid to late twentieth century, there seemed to be a new kid on the block as far as film genres
went. The Social problem films; films such as Boyz N the Hood by John Singleton, Kids by Larry Clark, and La Haine by Mathieu Kassovitz embrace the social ills of
their day and time. Each depicts the social injustices as perceived by the producer and the various groups which are featured. Of course, Social problem films are not anything new,
though they do have a different look. Some of the earliest social problem films came into life shortly after World War II. The problems that were focused upon differed from
the various eras and the social ills that were pervasive at the time. Sometimes the problem was immigration, other times it was womens rights. Modern times have turned to
the plight of the family and the lack of moral frameworks and social boundaries for young people. La Haine by Mathieu Kassovitz can be classified as a social problem film
in that the main character, Abdel, has been abused by the police. He has been beaten so badly that he has had to be hospitalized. After a riot breaks out
in a suburb where Abdel lives, a policeman loses his gun and Abdels friend, Vinz states that if Abdel dies in jail that Vinz and his gang will revenge Abdel.
