of circumstances. During his two decades as CEO of GE, Welch had transformed GEs portfolio of businesses, and created the organizational structure,
management systems and corporate culture that could mesh the benefits of massive size and diversity with the agility and entrepreneurial drive of much small enterprises. In other words, GE was
pretty much set and it should have been an easy and smooth transition. But the circumstances that occurred during Immelts early reign
were far from ideal. Within months of stepping up to the job, Immelt had to deal with the fallout from 9/11 and a recessionary economy.
In response, during Immelts first 10 months on the job, GEs shares fell by almost half their value.
The questions we try to answer in this paper involve where Immelt goes from here - and whether he has done any good during the past two years as CEO
