way to fix the genes that give rise to these diseases. When researchers discovered that viruses carried the keys to the kingdom in effect, could be modified to carry corrective
gene sequences to the defective genes in a persons DNA, gene therapy was born. As propitious a beginning as it was, to date no one has been able to make
that next step viable and as such, gene therapy is still a matter of science fiction. But, it is only a matter of time. Gene therapy is a remarkable idea.
Take the part of a virus that targets a specific area or tends to attach itself to a certain type of cell and piggy back a corrective type of gene
to take the place of the one that is faulty. Ultimately, this type of process could, theoretically, prevent diseases from even occurring because it would change the genes ability to
express that characteristic. The targets can be either somatic, which means it goes to some part of the body, or it can be germ specific, which means it tends to
go to egg and sperm cells(Fundamentals of Gene Therapy, 2002). In somatic gene therapy, the persons genome is changed, but the change is not something that can be inherited
by their offspring. Therefore, germ type gene therapy, the parents egg and sperm cells are reconstructed with the hopes that the genetic abnormalities will be eradicated before they have a
chance to manifest themselves. This latter therapy (germ) does not seem to have been investigated as thoroughly as the other types because the moral and ethical implications are greater, and
this field is still in its own infancy. Because of this ethical and moral concern, gene therapy research tends to move forward at what some would call a crawl. The
