been a controversial one. The idea that people deserve certain rights because of a specific lifestyle choice is a hard one to swallow. For those who harbor the belief that
a "normal" society consists of family units with moms, dads and kids, the concept of homosexuality is not only confusing, its downright disgusting. Although the truth of the matter is,
what goes on behind closed doors should stay there, in issues involving couples benefits and legislation, more and more gay activists are opening doors -- not necessarily of bedrooms, but
of information - in order to better support a persons right to do what he or she wants to do. According to
encyclopedia.com, the term "gay rights" is defined as ". . . organized efforts to end the criminalization of homosexuality, and to protect the civil rights of homosexuals" (Gay Rights, 2002).
In the United States, among all the rights that homosexuals battle for, one hotly contested issue has been that of "spousal benefits," such as health insurance and pension plans for
long-term domestic partners, as well as the legal recognition of unions between two members of the same sex (Gay Rights, 2002). Part of the challenge for gay couples is that,
for the most part, Biblically and legally, heterosexual unions are the only ones legally recognized when it comes to marriage. The United States, although it guarantees freedom of religion, does
base much of its rulings on Judeo-Christian beliefs. In some movements of Judaism, for example, rabbis will not marry gay couples (this is not true in the Jewish Reform movement,
