With this information, stakeholders can make informed judgments; senior management can decide if the company in expansion mode, while investors can decide if they want to put their money into this particular business. And yes, sometimes dollars and cents are very important to the process. But accounting is also about accountability (Introduction to Accounting, 2009). In other words, accounting ensures that a company is externally accountable for its actions and activities (Introduction to Accounting, 2009). To demonstrate accountability, companies will produce reports that accurately reflect their activities and the objective of those activities, as well as the people to whom they must account (Introduction to Accounting, 2009). The important aspect here, once again, is that the activities can be identified, measured and communicated. One such activity that has been more in evidence in recent years is corporate social responsibility, or CSR. CSR programs have ranged from recycling initiatives at branch offices to building cities and providing clean drinking water to impoverished third-world nations. Some companies, like Starbucks, invests in third-world nations because it makes sense - this is, after all, where a lot of the companys coffee is grown and it makes sense to have its coffee suppliers as healthy and happy as possible. Other companies embrace CSR as a likely promotional tool - by lending employees for a weekend to a Habitat for Humanity cause or by sponsoring walks for disease cures or other programs, these companies demonstrate that theyre willing to "give back" to the community. ...
