In 1964 at the end of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), there was the a joint declaration was signed by seventy seven that was the first known as the "Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries". This was the first step towards a policy " to promote economic and social development in the developing nations" (G-77, 2002). The first meeting took place two years later in Algiers, where the Charter of Algieers was proposed and adopted. It was also here that there was a development of the structure that was to form the basis of the different chapters that followed the declaration of this group of 77 (G-77, 2002). The chapters that developed at the subsequent meetings were FAO in Rome, UNIDO in Vienna, one of the best known UNESCO in Paris and UNEP in Nairobi. This was also followed by the Group of 24 which was formed in Washington. The G-77 can now be seen as comprising of 133 countries, more than the initial 77 through the organised growth of the community, but the name is still retained form this orginal formation. The countries that are covered span the globe with members in developing areas such as Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean all included (G-77, 2002). The aim of the group is to encourage development internationally as well as domestically. The promotion of the interests of the group are paramount in the aims of the group and there are the facilities for the promotion of "economic and technical cooperation among developing countries (ECDC/TCDC )" (G-77, 2002).
