evolving understandings of health science have upon the industry, as well as how related disciplines such as the study and production of biotechnological solutions will exert their own impact. Additionally,
the political climate as a whole has a great deal of power over how the pharmaceutical industry will develop; already, the pharmaceutical industry is one of the most heavily regulated
in the western marketplace, and there is every reason to suspect that this regulation may grow increasingly stringent as health interventions (especially those related to biotechnology) grow ever more complex.
Besides safety-related regulations, one might also look at the current economic situation in western countries such as the United States and project that future regulations may well be implemented in
order to further control access and cost of health care (and by extension, pharmaceuticals), in an effort to keep the country solvent. In short, without a broad examination of each
of these major factors of influence, any projections about the future of the pharmaceutical industry would be incomplete. This paper will attempt to draw several broad projections about the future
of the industry, based on an in-depth examination of emerging biotechnologies, changes in social attitudes towards the marketplace, and the degree of government regulation and intervention exercised. This paragraph
helps the student begin to introduce the idea of branching projections based on future trends. This being said, it should be clear that any singular projection about the future of
