health care industry. Virtually the only "winner" currently reasonably assured of continued success is the pharmaceutical industry, and that assurance is only fleeting. All of health care is
in a state of change, and future leaders will need to be able to manage that change rather than only react to it. Strategy
Shortell and Kaluzny (2000) "discuss strategy in terms of both internal and external sources of competitive advantage" (p. 405), most of which can be classified into five categories.
These five categories constitute the "5 Ps" of strategy. They are: * Position - focuses on consumers; * Power - structure, merger and acquisition; * Pace - "timing and
intensity of strategic actions" (Shortell and Kaluzny, 2000; p. 405); * Potential - from greater depth of resources and capabilities; and * Performance - realized results of effectiveness and efficiency
(Shortell and Kaluzny, 2000). There are three broad approaches to strategy open to any organization plotting its course for the future, including health
care organizations. They are: * Focusing on improving internal capabilities and performance; * Expanding market share through merger and acquisition; and * Realigning the products and services they offer
in the course of their business. Doing nothing but maintaining the status quo is an option for any company, but in todays business
