the Fungus Kingdom is that until the late 1970s, it did not even officially exist. Prior to 1978, there were only two "kingdoms of life", plant and animal, and fungi
were considered part of the plant kingdom. In 1978, the classifications were expanded to include five groups, which more accurately distinguished between the characteristics of the different organisms. Monera included
bacteria and blue-green algae, Protista included single-celled organisms such as amoebae, Plantae and Animalia continued to incorporate plants and animals respectively and Fungi covered a wide range of organisms such
as mushrooms, mildew, yeast and mould.
Even though it is still a broad grouping, all fungi share certain characteristics in common. As noted by allergynursing.com, fungi obtain nutrition by secreting enzymes which partially digest
the substrate on which they are growing, and the nutriments are then absorbed through the cell walls and it is this method of feeding which causes damage to the materials
on which the fungi grow: they can cause a number of diseases in both plants and animals. As noted by mold-help (2003) moulds can produce secondary metabolites such as antibiotics
and mycotoxins: the latter are not essential to the life of the mould, but appear to have the purpose of giving the organism an advantage over other moulds.
As mold-help states, these mycotoxins disrupt cell structures, interfere
with cellular processes of the substrate and are toxic to plant and animal cells. However, these higher organisms do not appear to be the specific targets of the moulds: rather,
