was 266 per square miles. About 35 percent of the people live in urban areas. India ranks second only to China among the
worlds most populous countries, with a population (1993 estimate) of 903,158,968; this represents an increase of about 220 million, or 32 percent, over the 1981 census total. The overall population
density in 1993 was about 712 per square miles. More than 70 percent of Indias population lives in rural areas. China (Zhonghua Renmin
Gongheguo) is the worlds third largest country by area (after Russia and Canada) and the largest by population. The total area of China is about 3,695,000 square miles. More
