is to increase fees and tuition. This, in turn, places a burden on students and in some cases, deters some students from attending college. One question about increasing tuition is
whether or not that action is ethical. It is not a simple question because if these colleges do not increase tuition and find other sources of income, they will shut
the doors. One of the most controversial sources of revenue is university-based research funds. This can lead directly into a conflict of interest. It is seldom without an ethical dilemma
because the company funding the research needs certain results when a profit is involved. It is not only corporations who provide large amounts of money to colleges. Private donors and
even venture capitalists are involved. This sounds harmless but as the examples in this paper will demonstrate, there can be very strong ethical problems. Funding Sources The state is
one major source of funding for institutions of higher education. In the United States, states must adopt numerous revenue-generating schemes to obtain funds to cover the costs of operation. Sources
of funding public colleges in the U.S. include tuition and fees, fundraising activities, alumni donations, sale of intellectual property, revenues from teaching hospitals, as appropriate, revenue from auxiliary services, athletic
