The role of the Personnel Department, now known as the Human Resource Department has evolved into playing a major role in the staffing, training and management of people in an effort to help to assure that the company or corporation is being as efficient and effective as possible. Human Resource Management is the business of getting things done through the effective use of people as a resource. "People are our most valuable resource" is a well known clich?, but any successful businessman knows just how true that statement is. A business cannot thrive if its employees are poorly trained, poorly motivated and have no feeling of job satisfaction. One of the purposes of establishing a separate department, Human Resource Management, is to assure that the most important resource of the company, the employees, are happy, motivated, and productive individuals. The functions of Human Resource are many and varied. There is a long list of activities, but perhaps, most important of these is deciding the staffing needs and then fulfilling those needs. Choices need to be made as to whether to hire employees or to use independent contractors. If employees are chosen, then the functions of the Human Resource Manager are to first find, then recruit and finally train employees.
