have, leaving them needing to do more with less resources (Babcock, 2004). This trend is important in any research that focuses on human resource functions. That said, the following
pages identifies and describes six of the many functions, components or elements (they all mean the same thing) of human resource departments. 1. Staff/Personnel Planning: Proper staffing is critical for
the companys success. The correct number of persons with the correct skills will help the company run smoothly. Human resource departments are responsible for assuring proper staffing. Understaffing will lead
to reduced revenue and overstaffing will lead to excessive and unnecessary employee costs. The HR experts will analyze the present needs and also the future needs of the company when
designing a staffing plan (Accel, 2005). Having the proper mix of employees with the proper skills is essential if the company is to meet its goals. When a company has
an appropriately balanced workforce, it also creates added value for their customers because all tasks and responsibilities will be performed at a high level of quality. 2. Recruitment and selection
of employees. After planning, HR knows what kind of skills are needed for which job tasks. The department then begins the process of recruiting, which can take many different paths,
such as internal advertising, external media advertising, contacting different types of agencies, such as colleges and agencies. When applications have been reviewed, certain applicants are invited for the companys interview
