who formed many of their ideas based on the use of animal experimentation. Thorndike, who constructed a functionalist view of behavior based on his theory of Law and Effect,
studied the animal behaviors of cats. Ivan Pavlov, who constructed an associationist view of behavior based on the concept of classical conditioning, used dogs to assess his theories of
learned and conditioned responses. Both theorists set the stage for the application of these theories to human populations and were important to the progression of educational and behavioral psychology.
Slide: Edward Thorndike Behaviorism Learning Theories Animal Experiments Connection between Animal Experiments and Human Learning Speaker Notes: Thorndike was recognized as a major contributor to
the study of behaviorism, primarily in his development of connections between specific stimuli and learned processes that resulted in behavioral change. While Thorndike agreed with John Deweys functionalist perspective,
he created what he viewed as a distinct branch of functionalism, described as a connectionist perspective, in which he focused on learning and education in relation to stimulus-response connections (Grinder,
1989). Thorndike helped to shape the utility of animal experimentation as a component of the study of psychology (Human Intelligence, 2012). Slide: Puzzle Boxes Animal
Intelligence: An Experimental Study of the Associative Processes in Animals; Cats were placed in a box; The box had a levered door; If the cats stepped on the lever, the
door would open; After repeated chance door openings, the cats learned that stepping on the lever opened the door. Speaker Notes: Thorndikes (1911) study of animal intelligence utilized
puzzle boxes, in which animals were placed and observations were made about their ability to escape the box. Thorndike observed that when a levered door was utilized that opened
