lets try a couple of examples to see what we get. Maybe the place to start is with definitions. According to Princetons on-line dictionary, "functional" is an adjective with a
great many different meanings. It can be something "designed for or capable of a particular function or use" such as "functional architecture"; or it can mean "involving or affecting function
rather than physiology," as in "functional deafness"; or it can mean "relating to or based on function especially as opposed to structure" as in, "the problem now is not a
constitutional one; it is a functional one"; or it can mean "functional, usable, or operational"; or it can mean that something, usually mechanical, is "functional, working ... performing or capable
of performing" an action (Functional). Most often, when we say something is function, we are using the last definition; we mean it works. It does what it was designed to
do, and it does it well. Furthermore, it will perform the same way again and again, and we dont have to worry that it will fall apart or suddenly produce
a different result or something entirely unusable. Can something functional also be beautiful? Certainly. Does it have to be? No. Lets look at the trivial but classic example of an
older car. It is no longer stylish; the manufacturer has loaded the newer models with all kinds of "bells and whistles" that this model doesnt have; and perhaps its gas
mileage isnt as good as the newer versions. But it handles well, it gets the driver and passengers where they need to go, safely and on time, it doesnt break
