Fugards play "Master Harold...and the boys." The Oxford English Dictionary Online Version defines "fair" as an adjective that can refer to someone who has a light complexion or to rules or standards that are just and legitimate. "Foul" is defined as an adjective that refers to anything that is "offensive to the senses...very disagreeable or unpleasant...[or] wicked or immoral." In "Macbeth," the witches are alluding to the fact that appearances can be misleading, as Macbeth appears noble, but is really treacherous and his treachery results in his gaining the throne, thus what was fair was really foul and foul takes on the semblance of fair prior to Macbeths downfall. In a similar manner, the relationships portrayed in Fugards play between two middle-aged black men, Willie Malopo and Sam Semela, and the teenaged, white son of the family who owns the restaurant where the men are employed, Hally, aka "Master Harold," are psychologically complex. Previously, prior to owning the restaurant, Hallys parents owned the boarding house where both men stayed and, therefore, the characters have known each other for a long time, since Hally was a child. Hally has taught Sam everything that he has learned in school and Sam, an intelligent man, as becomes someone with whom Hally can discuss his ideas on history, literature and the context of racial relations in 1950s South Africa, which is where and when the play is set. While the relations between Hally and the two black men seem fair, that is pleasant and agreeable, there is also tension beneath the surface, as Hally feels deeply conflicted in regards to the dichotomy that exists between the racial bias of his parents, particularly in regards to attitudes of his crippled, alcoholic father, and the much more sensible non=prejudiced teaching of his friend ...
