that no others abide by, traditions that are only special to the branch, and many other common cultural conditions that only apply to military branches. In James Jones book "From Here to Eternity" we are provided with a very deep and clear look at the society that is the Army. It is a society that is unlike that which exists outside the branch, and a society that has its own rules and own belief system. In the following paper we examine two characters from the book, Captain Holmes and Prew, as they present us with illustrations of the society that is the Army. The paper then examines the two together as they relate to their unique society. Captain Holmes The character of Captain Holmes is one that symbolizes the society that is the army. He is of the opinion, as are many soldiers, that individuality is not something offered in the culture that belongs to the army. The individual does not exist. The army exists. In many ways we could envision this, philosophically, from the perspective of socialism. The whole body, the unit, the society that is the army is what matters. The individual should not be different from another individual. Each person is only one part of a greater whole. And, Captain Holmes symbolizes this, for the army is his society, his life, his spirit, and he identity. Holmes tries to coerce many others into falling whole-heartedly into that society. He tries to convince Warden that the individual is of no use, and Warden is completely angered at this command. At every step of the way Holmes tries to take away the uniqueness that is Warden.
