was carrying me and my fellow travelers from the Barbados to the South Carolina shore cut through the shoreline edge of the fog that had surrounded us for the past
several hours, I caught my first glimpse of the land that would be my new home. Somewhat dark and ominous from the heavy treeline and untended land that surrounded,
the small village that would eventually become Charleston1 seemed quite unimpressive and maybe even a little intimidating. Its native inhabitants undoubtedly had much to be discontented about given their
negative interactions with other Europeans that I had read about2. I had placed much hope in this new land, however. It would be here that I would make
my home. This land offered me a reprieve from the barely survivable economic circumstances that I was fleeing in the Barbados.
As my ship drew nearer and nearer the shoreline I could more clearly distinguish the individuals that eagerly awaited our arrival on the shore. These individuals were of
the Cherokee people, a people that I was soon to learn had a strength and fortitude that could impress even the most experienced world traveler. With the knowledge of
what had happened to the native peoples of the Barbados, the native peoples that had simply been shipped out of their homelands by the Spanish so that they could labor
in Spanish gold mines, I couldnt help but wonder if I was simply reliving that point in history. I couldnt help but ask myself whether the white arrival to
this new shoreline would be as decimating to the native peoples as it had to the shoreline of the Barbados so many years ago3.
