education, and the development of the kindergarten, had a significant impact on the methodology of teaching and learning in the nineteenth century which is still valid in the present day,
and can be seen exemplified not only in aspects of mainstream education but also in such systems as the Montessori method, and the constructivist model of learning which is gaining
credence in some secondary education circles.
Bloomfield (1996) states that Froebel saw the life of child as having a link with a greater cosmic unity, and that this link was expressed through play. The
playthings, or gifts, which Froebel designed took the form of geometric shapes and through the use and observation of these forms, the child would learn symbols and meanings which allowed
increasing self-development and insights into the way that the outside world functioned. The basic forms were the sphere and the cube, which together symbolised knowledge, beauty and life.
To begin with, Froebels ideas did not gain
much credence outside of his native country, but in the nineteenth century the first kindergarten units were opened in British private schools, and after the Elementary Code of 1904, the
introduction of less restrictive teaching practices allowed Froebellian ideas to infiltrate public education also (Bloomfield, 1996).
