Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Therefore, Jackson (who also served as producer and co-screenwriter) elected to concentrate on the basic themes that tie the
three Quest tales together. In an interview, Jackson explained his approach to the films as a cohesive whole rather than as three separate and distinct movies: "I am interested
in themes about friendship and self-sacrifice. This is a story of survival and courage, about a touching last stand that paved the way for the ascent of humankind" (Taking on
Tolkien: Peter Jackson Brings the Fantasy to Life). In the novels and in the films, these themes are naturally t introduced in The Fellowship of the Ring. Although
the most dominant is obviously the classic conflict between good and evil, what particularly appealed to Jackson is that a consistent theme in the trilogy is "how friendship endures and
