different types of friendship. Friendships can be based on something as simple as going to the same school or working at the same company; or they can spring from shared interests. But the bonds usually vary in strength and sometimes they are only temporary. For instance, its much more pleasant to work with people one likes, and so friendships often from. But in order for people to truly become close, they have to have more in common than the name at the bottom of their paycheck. Thats why work friendships often dont survive if one person leaves the company. We also tend to form friendships of different "depths." That is, there are some people with whom we share only superficial information about ourselves. We may not be comfortable enough with them, or trust them enough, to tell them our deepest secrets. Or perhaps we simply dont get close to them because we just dont have much in common, or we like them well enough but we disagree on certain subjects of importance. For instance, we may meet someone we find pleasant and funny, but if the other person is a smoker and we feel strongly that its a terrible habit; or if they support abortion and we dont and so on, one or two issues may keep us from forming a really strong bond. There are also casual friendships that spring up out of circumstances: we meet people on a cruise or some other vacation and spend time with them. When the vacation ends we promise to keep in touch but rarely if ever do. Thats because, once again, we havent connected with the other people in anything but a very superficial way. Its also not enough to agree about intellectual subjects, because even very intelligent people will not always ...
