Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page essay that draws on the book Friday Night Lights, the 1990 bestseller by H.G. Bissinger that describes a high school football program in Odessa, a small town in Texas. Bissinger quotes one of the supporters of this high school football team as saying "Life really wouldn't be worth livin' if you didn't have a high school football team to support" (Bissinger, "Friday" 20). Considering the extensive cultural and historical background that Bissinger offers in this text concerning the town of Odessa, this statement is understandable, but the degree of fanaticism that it indicates is not defensible. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

foster parent home environments (Mannie 16). However, in Odessa, as in many towns in the US, high school football is viewed as more than simply being a beneficial experience, it
is a passion that is pursued with a religious fervor and the teenage boys that provide victory to a local school are frequently lauded and treated as minor gods (Ansen
53). This is because the identity of the town is frequently linked to the success of the team (Ansen 53). This makes the sentiments of the Permian booster quoted
above understandable within the socio-cultural context of the town. Bissinger explains how Odessa, in 1988, when he was doing his research, still incorporated much of its worldview from the late
nineteenth century when the town was first settled. Racism was rampant and there was still something of the sentiment that caused cowboys--it was speculated--to burn down the Methodist College that
was built in Odessa in 1889 (Bissinger, "Friday" 26). A winning football team seems to validate everything that is tied in with the towns identity. The pride of this
