society from when drugs were seen as last resort efforts, and psychiatric drugs reserved for the most psychiatrically ill individuals. Many remember that in the film One Flew Over the
Cuckoos Nest, the patients were made into zombies because they were overmedicated, a point clearly made by the author. Yet, today, tweaking the mental status of average individual, or pushing
their state osf happiness just a bit, is something that is done rather matter of factly with various drugs. No psychiatrists are even needed to write the many prescriptions that
exist. In the past, the drugs were thought to be able to quell voices, but those are the voices that emerge from the head of the schizophrenic, not the
average individual who is trying to control his negative thoughts. There is of course cognitive psychology for that. However, in this society that looks for the easy way out with
everything from a stop smoking solution to birth control in an easy to use "patch," it is hard to imagine that people will go for the old, psychoanalytic paradigm invented
by Freud. Will people take the time to lay on the couch and spend years and thousands of dollars on therapy? The answer is that people will likely go for
the short term treatments, like Short Term Dynamic Therapy, and while that is good for some, the danger of throwing out Freudian psychoanalysis is that it does things that the
short term treatment simply cannot. Further, while short term therapy can help anyone, just as pop psychologist Phil McGraw can shame someone into losing weight or changing his behavior, these
therapies are no match for the introspection accomplished with Freudian psychotherapy. Similarly, there is power yoga. It seems that a fast paced yoga defeats the purpose of this Eastern tradition
