Europe and across the shores. Yet, its legacy is less than desirable, at least to some , as new thought continues to emerge. There is a sense of cultural relativity, a questioning of values and this has been seen during the Roaring 20s as well as in the turbulent 60s. Different authors have different takes on the matter. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychotherapy, published a work called Civilization and Its Discontents which explored such ideas. In the non-fiction book, Freud (1989) looks at the limitations that society imposes, particularly when it comes to creativity, and mans struggle for individuality. This is also a theme that many science fiction authors address. Does the future hold a world where people are all the same? The reason why science fiction writers choose this is likely because there is much fodder in respect to this idea; the world indeed seems to be headed in such a direction. Today, schools are notorious for trying to make cookie cutter kids from the meld of children they teach. If a child does not conform, he is "classified." Some are put on drugs so that they will be more placid. While it may sound like the work of science fiction, the reality is that the problem of labeling and drugging children in the world is growing. Of course, Freud wrote in a pre-Ritalin world. Still, the same ideas have been around for quite awhile. Society in a general sense makes rules. Children begin their lives under parental control, who by a host of doctors are told to do such and such. Little is left to instinct as Dr. Spock and Dr. Dobson guide them, and sometimes individuality does get lost. When a child starts school, he or she gets a large dose of the strict nature ...
