matter of perspective. For example, while a turkey dinner is a "good" thing to the people who consume it, it is a very "bad" thing from the perspective of the
turkey. The follow examination of the role that Socrates, Plato and Freud saw for the human faculty of reason in determining moral questions, that is, the nature of "good,"
shows that while these three great thinkers all agreed that reason is the crucial key to morality, they each saw this factor from their own unique perspective. The centrality of
reason is show in the fact that Socrates proposed that "No man is voluntarily bad," as when someone knows that something is good, he will choose to follow that
course (Frost, 1962, p. 84). As this statement implies, Socrates believed that reason would dictate that it was not logical to pursue behavior that could be construed as "bad." Socrates
was convinced that there had to be fundamental principles of right and wrong. However, Socrates was willing to concede that an individual can desire an evil ting if he
mistakenly evaluates it as good. Therefore, the most significant activity for man, according to Socrates, is to discover what is good (Frost, 1962). For Socrates, "a life which is always
inquiring and trying to discover what is good is the best kind of life, the only life worth living" (Frost, 1962, 84). As this demonstrates, Socrates had immense faith
in the power of reason. Plato, Socrates pupil, is the best known and most widely studied of the ancient Greek philosophers (Honderich, et al, 1972). Platos perspective on good
and evil picks up where Socrates left off. For Plato, goodness is intertwined with his perception of the nature of the universe (Frost, 1962). Plato believed that the sensory world
