however, although there is speculation on the rationale underlying the writing of specific sections, there is less information available regarding the compilation of the work as a whole, due to
a lack of evidence. There is nothing within the text itself, for example, which rationalises or justifies its existence, even though such rationalisation can be found for particular sections. In
order to offer a plausible hypothesis as to the motivation for the compilation and dissemination of the Pentateuch as a whole, therefore, it is necessary to consider issues such as
the potential audience for whom the work was intended and the number of original sources from which it may have been compiled, as well as how far it should be
assessed from a historical perspective and how far from a primarily theological standpoint. In
The Pentateuch, Fretheim (1993) asserts that it is a manifestly a composite work which cannot be attributed to a specific historical period but which grew and developed over a period
of at least five hundred years, a perspective which is shared by other commentators. He also maintains that to consider the potential audience in too narrow and prescriptive a way
can be seen as counter-productive: it is necessary to look both at the validity which the compilers accorded to their sources and their motivation in disseminating the relevant material. For
example, it would be reasonable to suppose that the compilers considered it essential, from the perspective of preserving sacred material, to record what they viewed as deriving directly from God,
or providing a true insight into Gods ways, but at the same time they would also be acting in a way which they saw as fulfilling the needs of the
