a number of factors, one of the more important being whether the ecosystem is freshwater or marine. Terrain can also be an important determinant of habitat type. Marshes,
for example, differ significantly from open water bodies such as bays and lakes. Each of these habitats, however, can be either marine or freshwater. Saltwater marshes typically
occur at the fringes of bays and estuaries. They are shallow in their nature and sometimes even dry. According to where in the world the marsh is located,
typical vegetation includes Juncus and saltwort. Freshwater marshes have similar terrain to the saltwater marsh but they are typically located at the fringes of freshwater lakes, rivers, and creeks.
Typical vegetation might include cattail and Scirpus. In both types of these environments, of course, there is an assortment of other plants. Animal life is prolific as
well and ranges from the microscopic to quite large. Saltwater marshes, for example, might be the home to fiddler crabs and a variety of other life forms. Freshwater
marshes are frequented by animals as diverse as alligators and beaver. Bird life is particularly noticeable in the marsh environment. Great blue herons and osprey are a common
site in both types of marshes as is a large variety of small songbirds (Burt, 2007). Geology is an important determinant in the characteristics of both freshwater
and marine ecosystems. It is, in fact, the function not just of geological processes but also the function of biological processes (Montaggioni and Braithwaite, 2009). Furthermore, the geological
structure of a particular area can determine such aspects of that area as its ecological diversity. Consider as an example the marine features of Biscayne National Park, one of
