depravity. Unfortunately, this attitude has infiltrated the school system, as well, in that high school students are faced with the challenge of learning the basics - much less achieving
higher level learning - considered to be the cornerstone to a successful college preparation. Inasmuch as there are those few educators who take the extra time and effort necessary
to impart high school students with a meaningful education, far too many have adopted the "sink or swim" method of instruction for those who cannot follow along with the class.
This concept, which forces the student to either keep up or fail, comes from the fact that "teachers typically deal with the class as a whole and do not
consider the individual needs of students..." (Goldenberg, 1996, p. 353). What is even worse than the singular aspect of socioeconomic challenges is when high school students are learning impaired, as
well, and do not receive even a modicum of the special attention they need in order to learn. This places an even more significant hindrance upon the individuals ability
to stay afloat within a system that is geared only toward the masses rather than helping individuals. "The interactive approach yielded higher levels of academic discourse both during lessons
and in post-lesson narrative construction. Also, there was greater student participation when the lesson exacted higher levels of instructional conversation" (Echevarria, 1996, p. 339). The limitation of effective teacher/student
interaction did not always pose a problem for high school students who were forced to either sink or swim when it came to understanding the lessons. Historically, this questionable
method of instruction has proven quite effective in encouraging the students to swim and ultimately overcome the barriers inherent to lower socioeconomic communities. However, contemporary society is finding that
