schools. There are certain courses students must pass in order to graduate. Add to this the higher level standardized testing and students find themselves in a quarry. The demands and expectations for the student are very high. Millions of students drop out during their high school years. Why are they dropping out? There is no clear answer but if ninth grade is pivotal to their entire success during these four years, it would be worthwhile to investigate anything that can help them succeed. Research has revealed that ninth graders miss classes more than any other high school grade, they have the lowest grade point average among high schoolers, they have more failing grades, and they have more disciplinary problems (McCalumore & Sparapani, 2010). Ninth grade has the highest enrollment of any other grade but this may be do partially because an average of 22 percent of high school students repeat ninth grade and that number rises to as much as 40 percent in some urban schools (McCalumore & Sparapani, 2010). This is why ninth grade has been called the make it break it year in high school (McCalumore & Sparapani, 2010; Ratliff & Wilson-Jones, 2010.). The rigorous requirements of high school are vastly different than middle school. New standards have been established by many states, which leaves students with even more confusion and anxiety. They have trouble with the transition from middle school, which is generally smaller, to a high school, which is generally larger. There is some research that reports as many as 40 percent of students have trouble with the transition from 8th grade to 9th grade (McCalumore & Sparapani, 2010).
