The following paper examines their relationship during the latter part of the 18th century in Canada. The paper examines the history primarily in Quebec and illustrates, argues, how the French
were determined to maintain their identity within British realms and succeeded in doing so, even to this day, despite British pressure. The French and British in Canada
Migration and colonization was very slow in Canada from the discovery of the new land to the end of the 18th century. And, it
appears as though one of the slowest growing colonies were those French colonies in Canada (Buckner). One particular city, Acadia, which surrendered to the British in 1713, possessed a population
of only 1,000 at the time of the surrender.1 By the time New France had surrendered to the British in 1763 there were 75,000.2 It is this region that tells
us a great deal about the relations between the British and the French. Buckner states that, "New France was almost continuously at war,
with the Iroquois in the seventeenth century and the Thirteen Colonies in the eighteenth."3 This author also indicates that a large portion of the population was taken from the military
and that New France had originated from life as a fur trading post that developed into a military outpost which possessed a small colony.4 It is hardly surprising that such
