bowling. Michael Moore did a political documentary called Bowling For Columbine and in it, he documented that fact that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold had a bowling class and before
shooting up the school, they went bowling. And then there is the infamous work that began as an essay by Robert Putnam called Bowling Alone. There, it is claimed that
people just do not go bowling enough and that is at least in part--bowling being symbolic of civic participation--the problem with America. Although Putnam has a point about civic involvement,
judging from the category of bowlers just named, one has to wonder if it is bowling that should be encouraged. Still, each of these examples is a symbol of the
American landscape, a place where people are free to do as they like, to participate in activities that lead to civic involvement and to experience the freedom of choice. Bowling
is a mundane sport. It is one where there are few injuries. Unlike football or wrestling for example, parents are not afraid to tell their sons or daughters to participate
in a sport. It is inexpensive in that at least no one needs lessons. Bowling is easy and it is relaxing. It symbolizes community as there are bowling leagues around
America where people congregate in a wholesome activity. That said, the obvious question is what is so important about bowling and what is so important about civic involvement? It is
a rather innocent observation about bowling and civics, but the thing is that America is characterized by such things and the same paradigm is not existent in other counties such
