families struggling to survive. However, as the years passed there was more and more need for laborers due to the production of various crops. But, at the same time, the
early colonists did not have need of slaves or that drastic of a focus on free labor. With that in mind the following paper examines labor relating to French, Spanish,
and British colonists. French, Spanish, and British Colonists: Labor According to one author, "The earliest European colonizers of the Americas, the
Spanish, did not develop significant slave societies in its colonies" (Cheng, 2003). Even Columbus failed at attempting to force natives to work (Cheng, 2003). In relationship to their use or
condition of labor in other regions wherein the Spanish colonized they normally just utilized the established form of labor that was already in place (Cheng, 2003). And, because their search
for gold in North America perhaps proved futile there was certainly no need for labor to the extent that British colonists needed labor. As it relates to the French,
the French generally ventured "from their base around the Great Lakes...drawn south along the rivers which drain into the Mississippi, and then on down the great river itself" as their
interest was in furs (History of French Colonial America: Three slices of America: 18th century AD., 2006). In relationship to labor they generally immersed themselves in trade with the Natives
