XIV instituted an absolutist form of government, and yet it was that government that brought France out of very difficult economic and political times. Louis XIV can therefore certainly
also be remembered for bringing a real sense of identity and cohesion to France, and turning chaos into unity and the constructive use of resources.
Prior to the rule of Louis XIV, there had been a series of disjointed and ineffective rulers, whose reigns served only to embed France in more
extreme crises that the previous era. Therefore, with the reign of Louis XIV much of this changed. The government of Louis XIV was stronger and more unified that
its predecessors, and in this way was far more effectual as well. Amid the consternation that was Louis XIV was a
literal army of noblemen and attendants all designed to help the ever-impatient and temperamental Louis accomplish his goals and his whims. Versailles is perhaps the most recognizable embodiment of
the Louis XIV era, with its extravagance beyond measure that typified both the power and the effectiveness of Louis XIV himself.
Clearly, Louis defended his form of absolutism because of the accomplishments it allegedly produced. Under Louis, in many ways France thrived, and therefore Louis contended that his vision for
France was indeed the "right" one, and that it was in the interest of the French people to allow him the free-reign that he needed in order to accomplish their
