book as it relates to the New York City public school system gives one a significantly better understanding how, in the authors words, "teaching is suffering from narration sickness" (Freire,
2000, p. 57). Freire (2000) cites myriad occasions throughout history where inequitable practices have taken place with the exacting intent of maintaining a
certain separation of educational access. The author illustrates how the cultural impact of such decidedly purposeful actions has rendered a school system where only certain populations are privy to
knowledge and, therefore, the ability to further their economic pursuits. "Only dialogue, which requires critical thinking, is also capable of generating critical thinking. Without dialogue there is no communication,
and without communication there can be no true education" (Freire, 2000, p. 81). An example of Freires (2000) point is found within the
