("From the folks," 2003, p.2). In a more recent article, a discussion on the lawsuit filed by a board member regarding the states attempt to take power from the district
due to its financial fiasco is relayed (Herron, 2004). In assessing the Oakland Unified School District and their lawsuits pertaining to employment, one suit seems to stand out. It is
a suit that suggests the district is unfair in all of its employment practices but hones in on one aspect, a factor that posed a problem for the plaintiff. His
charges were perhaps too narrow. The district won and so it seems that things go on as always in this very troubled California school district. In this case, Wellborn
Freeman, who is a teacher working in the district had filed an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission which charges the district with "racial and sexual discriminatory practices among the
teaching staff" ("Public Schools," 2004). Freeman wanted the suit filed to address his own situation where discrimination is suggested only in the context of an election for the FAC or
Faculty Advisory Council (2004). What occurs is that an election among the school faculty is held each year to choose representatives regarding matters that concern the management of the school
(2004). Freeman was issued a "right to sue" letter and then went ahead and filed against the district and claimed that racial discrimination was a problem (2004). It seems
that while charges are serious, there seems to be a situation where institutional racism exists or other maladies that plague the district in terms of fair employment practices. In
