The freedom of the press is one of the most often touted aspects of a true democracy. This freedom allows the production and distribution of undiluted and unaltered perceptions
as well as facts to the general public. While the limits of the laws of libel and defamation certainly apply to the concept of freedom of the press, it
remains a tremendously powerful component of the democratic republic in particular. In the United States, of course, the freedom of the press is guaranteed by our first amendment.
Other countries around the world have not been as fortunate in the guarantees which are provided in regard to the freedom of the press but, as we shall see, even
such guarantees are not enough to fully ensure that the press does indeed act independently of external control. The concept of
freedom of the press has been explored extensively by philosophers of both the past and today. The liberal view of the concept of freedom of the press is that
it is integrally tied to other basic freedoms, particularly the importance of private property and free market. The intent of this paper is to explore that complex relationship as
it falls under the liberal philosophy, that great tradition epitomized by such philosophers as John Locke and other important minds of our history.
Liberalism, of course, is concerned with the maximization of human liberty. This is true in regard to numerous aspects of that liberalism whether it be in the form of
the private ownership of property or the freedom of the press. Liberalism, however, can only operate in the presence of certain tools. These tools include "private enterprise, free
