by doing so, peoples lives might be endangered. Yet, there are many situations where speech is limited unfairly and some claim that this is unconstitutional. For example, the ACLU alleges
that the Secret Service stops protesters who are against the president but allows free speech for supporters (Levondosky, 2004). Freedom of speech, along with other constitutional rights are taken very
seriously. There are other ideas about freedom as well and it pays to keep in mind that freedom is not reduced solely to freedom of speech. In the 1960s,
Janis Joplin sang that freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. One mans freedom is another mans prison. Some people prefer not to be free to choose.
It is easier for some to live under communism than to live free and make their own decisions. That said, most Americans would probably agree that freedom is important and
one of the most significant rights in the nation is freedom to speak ones mind. A student notes that freedom of speech as well as to be
able to use reason publicly in all matters without fear of retribution, is very important. It is what makes people fully human. The student notes that this idea comes from
a book edited by Ted Humphrey (1983) called Perceptual Peace and Other Essays . In any event, in exploring why this freedom or right is important in terms of
