p.PG). That is quite a philosophical, intangible view of freedom as it suggests that one is free only without attachment to the material world. There are other views of freedom. When speaking of freedom today, most take the political view which is that people are free when they are not living in a fascist country or controlled by an authoritarian leader. Of course, even in what is construed as the "free" world, people cannot just do as they like. They cannot run in their back yards naked. They cannot even paint their home an atrocious color without legal recourse by neighbors. If someone lives in a condominium with a board that makes rules, there are even more restrictions in what is deemed a free nation. Not too long ago, one building made headlines when it decided to outlaw smoking for new tenants. In any event, while people are inundated with rules, the majority feel free. Yet, there are groups and individuals who do not. Many people feel persecuted by the government and all the restrictions the governments impose and in fact, the recent mail bombings in middle America have been about that, or at least that is what the unknown bomber hints. Still, most Americans see themselves as free and voice their opinions loudly. What does this mean exactly? Is it the same freedom that the Founders spoke of? Clearly, it is, and looking at Mills On Liberty written when the nation was less than a century old, allows one to get a sense of just what freedom is to someone who was closer in time to the origin of the nation.
