heard that her husband is dead. It is a story of one womans realization that freedom awaits her, a freedom that speaks of the obligations and duties no longer expected
from love and marriage. Many argue that it is nothing more than a story that illustrates the constricting conditions of the institute of marriage and seem to ignore, or barely
touch, upon the fact that the woman did love her husband. In this love, or in many forms of love, there is a condition of self sacrifice that can be
oppressive. As such the following paper argues how Chopins story, while being a story about the oppressive nature of marriage for women, is the story about one womans brief experience
concerning freedom from love and all that it means. Story of an Hour Prior to truly moving into a discussion of Chopins story we offer up a poem
that will help us delve into how Chopins story is one about love and the freedom from love. The poem is Allen Ginsbergs "Song" and it is a poem that
reflects some of these perspectives, as seen here in the first few lines: "The weight of the world/ is love./ Under the burden/ of solitude,/ under the burden/ of dissatisfaction/
the weight,/ the weight we carry/ is love" (Ginsberg 1-9). In this poem we do not necessarily see love as an uplifting reality, but a
reality that is perhaps good and bad. With love comes obligations and duties, compromises and a subtle loss of self. It clearly speaks of love as far more burdensome than
